Week Six was a real barnburner in the SPFL with some close games and nailbiting conclusions. But before I recap that, what a weekend of real football we had!
Starting on Saturday with the Big Orange opening up a can on my man Saban! I knew there was a different animal down in Knoxville on their first drive when they just, wham bam thank you ma’am, drove it downfield like a Mack truck and put up 7. No nerves there. They seemed to answer every punch ‘Bama threw, all game long. And did you see the Tennessee O lineman barf on camera coming out of the huddle, look at his opponent and just nod his head, like, I got you. Love it man. Look it up. The blonde UT fan after the big stop at the start of the game wasn’t bad either. Love it man. Look it up.
But when UT fumbled at their own goal line to go down 49-42, I thought to myself, “well, they sure put up a real fight. They’re heading in the right direction, but, well, you know… same ending, different year”. I was wrong, they just answered right back. I was impressed. I mean, I’m no Big Orange fanatic, but I was certainly rooting for them against Alabama, I mean, come on! UT has a long way to go yet, but that was a fun game to watch as a football fan. Ole Miss and UT powering up the SEC?? Bizarro SEC!
And then, when I look at the NFL … I have a hot take for you: We had previews of the Conference Championship games this past weekend, back to back on Sunday at 4:30 and 8:15. Bills/Chiefs. Eagles/Cowboys. What do you think? Dallas showed me something when they didn’t curl up and die like usual. That defense is for real and if they’ll keep the same offensive philosophy when Prescott comes back … maybe?
Nah, I don’t really believe it. Dallas be Dallas.
But we do have some fun stuff going on in the NFL. The Giants and Jets beating the Packers back to back games. New York teams a combined 9-3! The Falcons at 3-3 and tied for first place. Green Bay at 2-4. The Bucs looking like they’re in self destruct mode. The Rams looking old and top heavy. (Same here, though). It is Bizarro NFL, but I’m enjoying it!
As for the SPFL, we seem to have ten teams in contention and two teams looking ahead to the draft. In the TB Division, the Moops and Monkeys still reign supreme at 5-1 with a trio of 3-3 teams (the Heroes, the 1’s, and Megatron) fighting it out. And … the Midgets at 1-5.
In the MF Division, it’s a tad bizarro as the Turf Turtles are still on top at 4-2, tied with the Bull Rings. Greased Lightning and the Piranha Brothers are only a game back at 3-3, with the Corn still in the mix at 2-4. And … the No Names at 0-6.
Turtles 113 — Corn 111.3: One of our real nailbiters as Austin Ekeler’s Monday night performance (25.7), coupled with Rhamondre Stevenson (27) was enough to put the Turtles over the top, eclipsing the Corn’s Kenneth Walker III (21.1) and Jimmy G (19.2).
Monkeys 112.6 – Heroes 106.6: And another nailbiter, with Monkeys triumphing, led by Stefon Diggs (30.8) and Hunter Henry (16.1) while the Heroes were led by Josh Allen (28.5) and Zeke (16.9). Lineup decisions can be brutal, as the Heroes choice of the Browns D (1) over the stellar Bills D (13) would have changed the outcome. But, to be fair, I’d have done the same thing — Buffalo against the Chiefs offense while Cleveland was facing off against a rookie QB named Bailey Zappe. It’s fun to say, give it a try.
Lightning 149.6 – Piranha Brothers 120.2: The Brothers ran into the highest scoring team of the week, with the Lightning sliding their way to a W, led by Tyreek Hill (29.5) and Brandon Aiyuk (28.3). The Brothers were led by JaMarr Chase (34.2) and Travis Kelce (19.3).
Megatron 111 – Midgets 89.9: Our high channel game of the week, saw Megatron cruise to victory, led by Patrick Mahomes (24) and George Kittle (16.3). The Midgets had a nice showing from Trevor Lawrence (25.5) and the Rams D (21) but was waylaid by three zeroes in the starting lineup and four players on a bye week. Some are wondering if the Midgets management might have been on vacation this week.
Bull Rings 127.6 — No Names 107: The Names made a valiant effort, but were no match for the Rings’ Mike Gesicki (24.9) and Alvin Kamara (20.3). Amazingly, the leading No Namers were Marcus Mariota (24.7) and Allen Robinson (17.3). (We interrupt this article to report an Allen Robinson sighting in LA. More to come at 11…)
Moops 146.6 — Bright 1s 142.9: And yet another nailbiter, as this one came down to the Sunday night game. The Moops went in with a lead but it was perilous, as they started the Dallas D while the 1s were relying on Jalen Hurts. In the end, Hurts gained on the Moops, but not enough. Mayberry was led by Joe Burrow (34.9) and Saquon Barkley (20.7) while the 1s had a dynamic duo backfield of Lenny Fournette (24.2) and C Mac (24.1).
Next Week
- Moops/Megatron
- Names/Turtles
- Midgets/Heroes
- Rings/Lightning (ooooh, that’s fun…)
- 1s/Monkeys
- Brothers/Corn
After reading some real putrid reviews (both official and Twitter style) of Halloween Ends, I think I may stick with streaming it on Peacock rather than splurging at the cinema.
I didn’t have time to screen the NFL Memes page this week. Hopefully back to it next week. Y’all have a good weekend and best of luck!
