I sit here in a lonely hotel room on a business trip trying to post a quick article before the next NFL/SPFL week kicks off, when I get the notification … “Tony Bennett retiring. Effective immediately.”
Wait. Whut?
I don’t genuinely “look up” to many people in the world of athletics. There’s many that I enjoy watching or rooting for (or against…), but Tony Bennett is one that I genuinely admire. As a coach, as a leader, as a man. Because of him and what he’s done at Charlottesville, I look forward to college basketball season, at least a little bit, each year. I know his teams will play hard, will play D, and will either lose in the first round or win the whole darn thing. So, why is he retiring just a couple of weeks before the season? I’m praying it’s just that he’s done with this whole NIL world he inhabits now and it’s not a health crisis or personal crisis. I’m not sure I could handle it.
I was already shook when I opened the SPFL website this week and saw the #1 ranked squad in the league was … The Bitter Midgets?!?! What is this, 1999?
The Midgets sit atop the TB Division standings, winners of three straight and holding a tiebreaker edge over the 5-1 Lightning, at this point. The Moops and Auto Picks are both at 4-2, while the red hot Thunder Monkeys are at 3-3. The Piranha Brothers bring up the rear at 1-5. Over in the MF Division, the Bright 1s continue to reign at 4-2, while the Beasts and the Corn are a game back at 3-3. Heath’s Heroes are a dangerous 2-4, while the Turtles and Megatron languish at 1-5.
Auto Picks 151 — Moops 131: The Auto Picks picked up an important W, led by trade acquisition Bijan Robinson (27) and the newly benched Justin Fields (24). The Moops gave it a shot, led by the Steelers D (24) and Kenneth Walker, Jr. the Third (22).
Turtles 138 — Beasts 92: The Turtles dealt Beauty and her Beasts their third straight loss, led by King Henry (27) and George Kittle (22). The Beasts were led by Tyrone Tracy (24) and Joe Burrow (22), but were snakebit by James Cook’s Monday night injury scratch and the injury zeroes of Dallas Goedert and Chris Olave.
Midgets 151 — Brothers 132: The Midgets continued their reign of minute terrors, led by Chris Godwin (37) and Jalen Hurts (25). The Piranha Brothers put up some nice points, led by Terry McLaurin (23) and Keenan Allen (21).

Corn 157 — Megatron 99: The Corn treated Megatron liked the Lions treated the Cowboys, running trick plays to offensive guards and piling up the points, led by Deebo Samuel (28) and Josh Downs (26). Megatron had Cole Kmet (24), JK Dobbins (20) and not much else.
Monkeys 124 – Lightning 118: The Monkeys won a nail biter thanks to Diontae Johnson and Stefon Diggs both leading at 19 points. The Lightning were led by Jordan Love (29) and Breece Hall (23).
Heroes 121 — 1s 120: Wow. What a finish. The Heroes held on, thanks to Joe Mixon (28), Josh Allen (25) and Garrett Wilson not catching one more pass on MNF. His 29 points led the Bright 1s and Lamar Jackson chipped in with 21.
